Give me Liberty!

Josh, Paul, LibertyI’m in the City of Brotherly Love… Philadelphia… for the National Science Teacher’s Association Conference. So far, I’ve consumed some tasty food and beverage, explored the streets of a new city, saw Bill Nye, lunched with a stranger, extracted DNA from a strawberry, assembled a plastic model of a DNA double helix, and networked with my equivalents at other universities. So, it’s been a blast and I’ve only been here for a day.

Tonight I met up with Paul, my old W&M college roommate. The photo to the left is of my last visit to Philly back in 2006 where I checked off the required Liberty Bell visit. It’s always amusing to recount our visit to this symbol of liberty… mostly because of the multiple civil liberties one has to give up to view it. Only after showing proper ID, getting patted down and wanded, removing my belt, and emptying my pockets, was I able to stand behind a rope and look at the bell. Ah, Freedom.

That’s it? That’s the famous liberty bell? Seems rather puny!
